Today, I will be looking at the Goethe-Zertifikat B1. This exam was jointly developed by the Goethe-Institut, the Austrian ÖSD and Swiss Freiburg University in order to have a standardised certificate for all three German-speaking countries. There are two versions, one for younger students between 12 and 16 years of age and one for adults over 16 years of age. This certificate will prove that you can do the following: · Understand the main points in a conversation or a text if communication is about daily topics such as work, school and leisure and standard language is used · Cope with most situations while travelling to a German-speaking country · Express your opinion on topics that you know · Talk about your own experiences and life events This certificate will also allow you to do the following: · Live and work in Germany (immigration purposes) · Attend a preparatory course (Studienkolleg) to qualify for admission to a German university The exam is composed of 4 parts: reading, listening, writing and speaking. You will pass if you obtain 60% (60 out of 100 points). 1. Reading is composed of 5 exercises to be completed in 65 minutes with a mixture of multiple choice and true/false texts. 2. Listening is composed of 4 exercises to be completed in 40 minutes, also with a mixture of multiple choice and true/false questions. In two of these exercises, you will only listen once, so these exercises may be more difficult and need more practising! 3. In the writing section, you will have three tasks to be completed in 60 minutes. You will write two compositions of approx. 80 words and one of approx. 40 words. 4. The speaking only lasts 15 minutes and you will have 3 tasks to do: plan something like a trip and explain how/when/where/etc the trip will take place (3 minutes), do a short (3 minutes) presentation about a topic given to you, have a discussion (rest of the time, approx. 9 minutes) with the examiner about this topic.
